A Summer Self-Care Scavenger Hunt

This post is sponsored by Depend® Brand. All opinions and statements are my own.

Summer isn’t over yet! Technically we have until September 22nd to squeeze all the juice out of summer. I’m surprised at how fast the months are flying by particularly during this pandemic.

When I was young, I thought scavenger hunts looked like so much fun. Probably the closest thing I came to one was an over-the-top birthday party my older sister helped plan. Susie decorated the brown paper bags with every party goer’s name and a bunch of colorful balloons. Then she hid candy all over our backyard and let us enjoy a wild sugar hunt.

When my kids were younger, we decided to tell them we were going to Disney World by having a Valentine’s themed scavenger hunt in the house. We laid clues out in various rooms and most of the treats in each spot were Disney-themed. The final stop revealed our big announcement – we’d be headed to Disney later that month! They still talk about this memory almost every Valentine’s Day. Here’s a cute memory from this trip:

20 Fun Things to Discover this Summer

We can all use a bit of fun and more self-care in our lives. I had so much fun creating this Summer Self-Care Scavenger Hunt. Some of these are physical items you find (or create for others to find) and others are things you can discover either about yourself or your community.

1.  Enjoy a portion-controlled snack – Find a new popsicle flavor during your next trip to the grocery store or rediscover one you enjoyed from your childhood. My favorite popsicle used to be the Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake bars.

2.  Take a short journey into nature and find a few nice-sized stones you can decorate with your care recipient or family members. Sharpies work great if you don’t want to make a huge mess.

3.  Disperse the decorated stones around a local park or along the sidewalks in your neighborhood for others to find.

4.  Search for a pen and mark your calendar to visit Walgreens from August 30-September 5 (2020). There you’ll catch a great bargain – just $1.99 for this Depend Silhouette Variety Pack. To redeem the savings, use a $2 off Depend coupon from August 30 Smart Source and a $2 off Depend coupon from the Walgreens Monthly Savings Coupon book.

5.  Ask a family member to select a letter from the alphabet. Now, head to your bookshelf or to be read pile and select a book starting with that letter. Read the first chapter.

6.  No time like the present to stop and smell the roses. Take a photo of yourself with a flower and text it to a friend or family member.

7.  Find an unusual item in your pantry and search for a recipe to make using this ingredient. This Tasty app has been fun to use.

8.  Find the summer items in your closet you have yet to wear this year. Either create an outfit around one item to wear or start a donation pile.

9.  Write a letter or email to someone you have lost touch with but think about. Recollect a story that makes you smile.

10.  Find 10 minutes of alone time in a cozy cool spot to pray or meditate.

11.  Search for caregiver support on Facebook to see what may be a fit for you. Join a private virtual support group like Depend’s Incontinence Community or our Happy Healthy Caregiver Facebook Group.

12.  Open Spotify or Pandora and browse for a fun summer playlist to enjoy while doing chores or running errands. I’m liking this Acoustic Summer playlist on Spotify.

13.  Locate a cozy spot for an afternoon nap…porch, patio, hammock, or poolside lounge chair.

14.  Find a few friends or family members to join you for an outdoor picnic at a local park (ordering take-out counts!)

15.  Create something using what you found in nature (e.g. pine cone basket, flower arrangement, pebble picture frame, shell soap dish, infused water)

16.  Search for today or tomorrow’s sunrise or sunset time. Enjoy a cup of coffee with the sunrise or a glass of wine with the sunset.

17.  Pick a year where you were between 8-16 years old and search online to find out what the summer blockbuster was that year. A great option when it’s just too hot or rainy to go outside. I searched for ‘1984 summer blockbuster’ and scored with a few selections: the original Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, Gremlins, and Beverly Hills Cop!

18.  When life gives you lemons make lemonade. Homemade lemonade really hits the spot on a warm day and you can make it as tart or as sweet as you want.

19.  When is the last time you went looking for the big dipper on a starry night? Here’s how to go stargazing and locate the summer constellations.

20.  Find an hour to enjoy an outdoor game such as cornhole, pickleball, croquet, or bocce ball. I recently played with a lighted bocce ball set at night and it was so much fun (and a lot cooler after sunset).
